2nd Annual Dare2Care OBX Shred Fest

Shred Fest To Bring The Stoke In May

The second annual Dare2Care OBX Shred Fest will be held Saturday, May 20 from 2-8:30pm at the Soundside Event Site in Nags Head.  Gates open at 1:30 and opening ceremonies start at 2pm sharp!

The family-friendly event will feature live music by multiple bands and musicians, demos by professional skateboarders, BMX riders, roller derby women, Special Olympics athletes, food, art, a silent auction, games and more.

Shred Fest is an annual fundraiser for Dare2Care OBX, which builds awareness for Veterans and encourages inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities within the Outer Banks community.

“It is my dream to have folks with special needs and Veterans feel more included in our community, and Shred Fest is an event where we can come together to support these two deserving groups,” said Dare2Care OBX Founder and Radio Broadcaster Lisa Brickhouse Davis.

Shred Fest supports multiple initiatives including free, year round music classes for Outer Banks Veterans and people with special needs through the Dare2Care OBX music program.

“Music is the one place where we all connect. It is through music that we don't see differences, but instead our similarities. Music is our common universal bond. The Dare2Care OBX music program offers healing, a sense of purpose, personal growth, and inclusion,” added Brickhouse Davis.

The inaugural Shred Fest enabled Brickhouse Davis to start the Dare County Inclusive Rock Band, which is a seven person band made up of members of the Veteran, IDD and Typically Developing communities. The band receives weekly lessons from Outer Banks musician Ruth Wyand and guest instructors Shelli Gates and John Wilkinson of the Motu Music Foundation at The College of the Albemarle in Manteo.

Dare2Care OBX has provided additional opportunities through The College of the Albemarle, including helping Veterans learn how to enroll in classes and assisting a soon-to-be First Flight High School Special Education graduate with obtaining a scholarship to participate in the college’s new Hospitality and Tourism Certification Program.

“As the Dean of The College of the Albemarle I can’t say enough about the contributions our Veterans and students of intellectual disabilities make to our business and college community. It is an honor to partner with Dare2Care OBX in making dreams come true for our ID and Veterans on the Outer Banks,” said College of the Albemarle’s Dare County Campus Dean Timothy Sweeney.

Dare2Care OBX brings awareness, support and healing to area Veterans and increases community inclusion for people of all ability levels.
